Self-acceptance

Hello. Today I’m back for another article. But I wanted to do something a tiny bit different and talk about a more serious matter. Before you read this, I just wanted you to know, this is just my point of view. If you don’t agree with me, that’s fine, as long as you also respect my opinion.
Youtube, just like any other entertainment platform, is known to be amazingly inspiring. According to one’s peer of interest, Youtube offers inspirational contempt about make-up, fashion, decoration, gaming, humour and the list goes on and on. But entertaining people is not its only purpose, don’t misjudge Youtube as a nice little social media for self-obsessed teenagers. Youtube not only is a real hit for the internet world, but also allows people from all around the world to share freely their sometimes brilliant ideas and opinions.
Whatever elders might think about our generation, the millennials are definitely not just naïve and narcissistic fools. The millennials have finally understood the basis of the odd thing that we are all pursuing: happiness. You have to love and accept yourself as you really are in order to love and accept the others. And Youtube is full of really open-minded people encouraging others to feel free to be who they are deep down.
One of the most important acceptance process this platform promotes is homosexuality. Society has always rejected what it was scared of: the minorities, people they can’t understand.  Homophobia is one of those fears.
If you type: “Coming out” as a key word on the search bar you’ll find hundreds of videos that could really struck a chord with someone struggling to accept his/her homosexuality. People who share their struggle and how they overcame and broke free from the conservative society’s negative point of view on their sexuality.
I heard too many heart-breaking stories of bullying, desperation, suicide. However, I am so excited for the bright future ahead of us. Youtube is one of the factor of this mind-blowing movement which is self-acceptance. But it’s just a platform that has given the power to human beings to give love, understanding and support to others. Despite the fact that there are innumerable problems on our planet, I believe the world is changing for the best. I keep having faith in humanity because of amazing, inspiring people. If you want to hear about those people, here are some videos I personally found eye-opening:

The Fault in our stars movement

Hello everyone! Prepare yourselves, I am back for another article!

So today, as you have probably guessed, I’m going to talk about youtube. Obviously.

I’m going to explain the obsession that youtube and all the community around it creates on the daily users. But don’t close this tab! This will not be another scary, weird post about how I love him (despite the fact I still hopelessly do). It may not be as gripping as other very scientific research about addiction because I definitely don’t have the skills to write something that clever, but this is just my point of view.
Now you must be utterly lost but I’ll stop beating around the bush and just go straight to my point.
I’m not really addicted to youtube because I could totally live without it. But I realised, after watching a lot of videos from the same “youtube stars”, that they were creating some kind of obsession.

I’m going to talk about one example I’ve participated in. All the youtube community (and when I say all, I really mean ALL) was talking about/ praising THE book “The fault in our stars” by John Green. Indeed, John Green is a youtuber and has been running a youtube channel called “vlogbrothers” for more than six years. Not to mention he has created “Vidcon”, which has become a huge youtube convention where users get to meet their favourite youtubers (18’000 people attended in 2014).
But let’s go back to the book. So, basically, here is the plot: a teenage girl called Hazel who suffers from terminal cancer falls deeply in love with Gus, a handsome guy, who (guess what?) also has cancer (and obviously, he is older, duh). Their love is infinite (“OMG I want to be Hazel so bad, she has a cute boyfriend – and cancer“haha). And at the end (SPOILER ALERT!) one of them dies and here we go for an oh-so-long rumination about death.

I’m being really cynical but I must admit that, at first, I loooooved that book. Seriously. Loved. It. And this is all because of you! Youtube! Because everyone was talking about it, saying it was so breathtakingly clever and true how John was meditating about life, death, love and blablabla. But this is a book clearly aimed at lonely teenage girls complaining about their lives. And, yes, it is a good book to start thinking about “what the hell am I doing on this planet?”. And yes I read it twice, and yes I went to the cinema to watch the movie adaptation, twice too (which makes 30 Swiss francs in total), and yes I did a freaking poster with quotes of the book that is still on my wall! And yes, I suppose I can tell, when I look back, that I’m a suggestible fool.

But when Youtube calmed down, I did a little reality check. I saw the trailer one more time, read some parts of the book, looked at my poster and suddenly realised that… this book wasn’t as good as everybody was pretending it was and certainly not as good as I was pretending it was! That struch me in my journey above the skies and brought me straight down to earth. The book was just bringing to life a new feeling which a lot of girls my age have never experienced before. And, I mean, who doesn’t like a heart-breaking love story? But there are so many other superbly written books that go so much deeper in one’s soul.

As you can tell, I can’t really nail my colours to the mast because I love the book but hate myself for loving it, and you may think that my post is not directly related to Youtube. But I’m sure all the Youtube consumers see a direct link between youtube and their probable addiction to “The fault in our stars”.

Anyway, I hope you found this article interesting, and if you did, please make sure to share and comment it.  See you soon for another post.

My relationship with Youtube

Hey guys. This is my blog and this is my first ever article.

Youtube and I have been in a relationship for about a year and I'm going to talk to you guys about it. I have a lot of opposite and confusing feelings about this relationship so this post may not be really well structured.

I met Youtube approximatly in Autumn 2013. At first I just created a account and started following "the Janoskians" because a friend told me to and I, as a teenager, just do what people tell me to do without thinking. So "the Janoskians" is a group of five Australian teenagers that film themselves doing really stupid things such as pepper spraying each other, eating live worms, drinking 3L colorated milk and throwing up rainbows etc etc etc... I found it hilarious- and please don't judge me, it is known that people find stupid things really funny-. So one night that I was just hanging out with Youtube and the Janoskians, I came across a video called "Dare or Dare- British bloggers VS Janoskians" where Mazzi Maz, Alfie and Marcus Butler were challenging the Aussies.
And that's how it all started.
I stayed up all night to spend as much time with Youtube as I possibly could, subscribing to more and more youtubers and watching more and more videos of all kinds, getting more and more dark circles and increasing more and more my consumption of concealer.

TatcherJoe, Tyler Oakley, Troye Sivan, Jenna Marbles, Tanya Burr, Jacksgap, Fun for Louis, MrBen Brown, Jim Chapman, Caspar Lee, Oli White, Smosh, Hannah Hart, Daily Grace, Emma Blackberry, the FineBros, Zoella, Mamrie Hart, Miranda sings, AmazingPhil, ...
I was totally losing control.

I have to say that Youtube is kind of ignoring me so it's utterly a one-sided relationship
... but I just can't help loving him...
I put my all life on the back burner for him.

I have now overcome this addiction, even though it's still a real struggle. If you are or have been or know someone suffering from this disease, comment and share this blog. You are not alone, it is estimated that more than eight hundred million people visit youtube each month. Things could be looking up.
